Very small side yard (8'W x 30'L main area, plus a 4' W dogleg around the back) space, on the north side of a three-story urban infill residential project house in Seattle gets turned into an urban retreat for two. The landscape includes dining and sitting area, bbq, in-ground fire pit, steel retaining walls, and planters, and dark stained wood fence. Plant materials add contrast and enclosure. The diagonal plan creates movement, visual depth, and intimacy, in a delicate small side yard.

Whole site landscape renovation in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood, where the full shade front yard includes a new water feature and plantings, and the sunny rear yard receives a new dining deck, arbor, seating area, and raised garden beds for edibles

Urban landscape masterplan and installation. We created continuity of color, texture, and form starting at the street and front yard, and reaching to the rear yard and alleyway. Contemporary and naturalistic plantings blur the lines of rigidity and formality of this modern garden, while the structure of hardscaping holds the composition together year-round.

Mid-century architecture inspired the renovated landscape design including parking strip redesigned with drought tolerant plants, new patios, deck, water and fire features and renovated plants throughout the landscape.

Removing yards of old brick, the front yard becomes a welcoming space with a new entry garden including vats of blooming perennials attracting bees and hummingbirds. The new address sign brings a modern touch to the traditional home. Stormwater management techniques including a landscape stone swale and downspout diversion are used to keep water on site.

Forbes Backyard and Water Feature

The new home came with lawn and a new fence. Working with the owner we created a custom design for the rear yard including an intimate, but striking water feature fountain and rill, a large concrete entertaining patio, and areas for relaxation (hammocks) and outdoor seating. Plant material lean towards the contemporary, while including roses, hydrangeas, and tomatoes.
